A lane in May

Hand on heart, I’m an autumn girl, but there’s something about May that feels essential. Imagine a year without it? It wouldn’t be right. It’s the month when nature begins to show her full abundance, when she ramps up the energy to palpable levels and a tremendous flourish leaves the countryside transformed.

This is the time of the cow parsley, waves of it, frothing along the hedgerow. The hawthorn blossom makes its appearance - the true may blossom…

Life explodes into the lane. Insects are busy everywhere. The buttercups are back, the elderflowers arrive and towards the end of the month, the foxgloves sprout their tall spikes.

The weather has warmed and the atmosphere changes. Easy to fall into the spirit of Beltane.
