You know they say it pays to look up, well at St. Mary's church in Attenborough, Nottingham this is particularly true, because up there on the piers of the columns in the nave are these remarkable early thirteenth century carvings - grotesques (and appropriately described).
I have a thing for this style of decoration. It somehow feels extremely modern even though it's actually 800 years old. Imagine the thoughts and sense of humour of the people who created these and then put them up for posterity in the heart of their church. (I'm glad they did).
